Opening July 15, 2009

Can you believe that only one major film is opening this weekend? What is going on?

The 6th movie in the Harry Potter franshise finally hits theaters. Since the movie was pushed back from last fall, the fans are very excited. Personally, this one looks the best. I just can’t believe that there is another movie. My goodness, when will it end?

Review: Public Enemies

From the trailer of Public Enemies, you would think that this movie is full of action, bank robberies and excitement. Maybe even an updated version of the 1987 classic film, The Untouchables! Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

Public Enemies moved very slowly. The main problem was the movie was trying to tell too many stories at one time. Is the movie about the birth of the FBI or John Dillinger? I wasn’t sure. Now, when we got to the action scenes, they were good and exciting but the scenes where too far apart. I really wanted to learn more about Dillinger and his romance with Billie. But once I realized who the director was, it explained a lot. Michael Mann is the director. He directed the 2006 flop Miami Vice. It had the same problem as Public Enemies…confusingly slow!

The only saving grace for the movie was Johnny Depp. I do not understand why he has not won an Oscar yet. You can’t help but fall in love with Dillinger because of Depp’s portrayal. He was amazing! Although you knew that Dillinger was going to die, you wanted him to live. I love cheering for the bad guy. Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis was okay. He was the same in Batman Begins and Terminator: Salvation. The same blah character. He doesn’t bring any depth to a character to me. It’s the same thing all the time. Yawn.

Overall, Public Enemies was okay. Not great but okay. It’s worth seeing but I say wait for the DVD and enjoy. You don’t have to see it on the big screen.

Opening July 10, 2009

Basically, Brüno is the same movie as the 2006 hit film, Borat. The only difference is Brüno is a flamboyant gay Austrian fashionista. I'm not sure if the gay rights groups should be excited or pissed. Either way, they can find If you liked Borat then you’ll like this one. Personally, I’ll wait for cable.

I know I’ve seen this movie before. I know this plot is nothing new, but yet I find myself wanting to see it. True, it will be better on DVD this fall but I do love a cute teen movie and this movie has all of the makings of one.

Summer of Movies: The July Edition

Title: Ice Age: The Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Release Date: July 1st
Plot (from IMDB.com): When Sid gets into some trouble, it's up to Manny, Ellie, Diego, and Scrat to save their friend. Their mission leads them to an underground world where encounter dinosaurs, flora, and fauna -- as well as a one-eyed, dino-hunting weasel named Buck.
Thoughts: Looks cute, just hope that it’s better than the second one!

Title: Public Enemies
Release Date: July 1st
Plot (from IMDB.com): The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.
Thoughts: Love Johnny Depp as a bad guy. That’s enough said. If this movie is a quarter as good as the previews, it’s going to be great!!!

Title: Brüno
Release Date: July 10th
Plot (from IMDB.com): Sacha Cohen does it again as the flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter Brüno who travels the world in search of the latest style trends and opinions on all things pop culture.
Thoughts: Not sure what my thoughts are on this movie, but I will say I won’t spend a lot of money on it.

Title: I Love You, Beth Cooper!
Release Date: July 10th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A nerdy valedictorian proclaims his love for the hottest and most popular girl in school – Beth Cooper – during his graduation speech. Much to his surprise, Beth shows up at his door that very night and decides to show him the best night of his life.
Thoughts: I love teen movies. They are so over the top. Although this one looks really cute, I somehow think I’ve seen this before. But I’ll watch it anyway. If nothing else it will be great on a Saturday evening.

Title: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Release Date: July 1st
Plot (from IMDB.com): In his sixth year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter discovers even more about the evil Lord Voldemort's past, thanks to his mentor Dumbledore and mysterious textbook marked "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince." By the end of the year, nothing will ever be the same
Thoughts: The question is all over the web, has Harry Potter lost his magic? Well from the people I know who love Harry and the gang, they’ll say NO he hasn’t. So if you love Harry, then this is the movie for you. All I want to know is…when does he graduate? Dang!

Title: G-Force
Release Date: July 24th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A covert espionage team of specially-trained guinea pigs are sent on a mission to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world.
Thoughts: You know going in that this movie is going to be two things: for kids and silly. If you have kids, this will be a must see. If you don’t, wait until cable.

Title: Orphan
Release Date: July 24th
Plot (from IMDB.com): After their unborn baby dies, Kate and John Coleman decide to adopt a child as a hopeful way to bring some joy and normalcy into their lives. Esther, a 9-year-old orphan, captivates the couple, and comes home to live with them, though a strange sequence of events follows Esther's arrival.
Thoughts: This movie is coming out in limited release but I hope they expanded the film. Orphan reminds me a lot of the Good Son with Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood. I’m excited to see this one!

Title: The Ugly Truth
Release Date: July 24th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A macho morning TV show correspondent makes a bet with his love-challenged producer: If his tips on how to land and keep a guy don't work, he'll quit the business. But while he coaches her through a fledgling romance, can he avoid falling for her, and vice versa?
Thoughts: The Ugly Truth reminds me soooo much of 2001’s Someone Like You staring Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman. Let’s see if they throw in a twist to make it different. Chances are slim on that.

Title: Funny People
Release Date: July 31st
Plot (from IMDB.com): Veteran stand-up comic George Simmons is given less than a year to live, and befriends an aspiring comedian, whom he hires as his personal assistant and protégé, as he reconnects with his past.
Thoughts: I’m truly on the fence on this movie. I like Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen is okay but this movie doesn’t say anything to me.

Title: Adam
Release Date: July 31st
Plot (from IMDB.com): Soon after Beth moves into her new apartment, the beautiful, emotionally fragile writer is drawn to her downstairs neighbor, Adam, a handsome young guy who has Asperger's Syndrome, an odd fellow with whom a relationship seems impossible.
Thoughts: Did you ever see this cookie movie called The Boy Who Could Fly? If not, rent it then watch Adam. Just from the previews, it’s almost the same movie.

Title: Aliens in the Attic
Release Date: July 31st
Plot (from IMDB.com): The Pearsons find their family vacation interrupted by an alien invasion. The species, who initially say they come in peace, using mind-control gadgets and other threatening devices. Can the Pearson kids save the family from doom?
Thoughts: Thoughts….I don’t think I have any. The same kids you took to see G-Force will want you to take them to see this movie. Just be prepared to take a nap. Although seeing Doris Roberts flip in the air might be interesting.

Monday, June 29, 2009

Opening July 1, 2009

This movie looks too cute. I really hope that it’s better than the second Ice Age movie. I thought that on was not well put together and the ‘re-populating the species’ was not a good thing for little kids. How do you explain to a little kid what that means? Let’s hope part 3, doesn’t have those kinds of surprises.

I’m so excited to see this movie. I love Johnny Depp as a bad guy. Wow. This is going to be good.

Review: Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen

Two years ago, I sat in a theater and watched Transformers. As exciting as the special effects were, the plot had holes big enough for Optimus Prime to drive through. So when it was time to go see the Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen, I was a bit nervous. I will say this much, the plot did have holes, but this time they weren’t as big. Maybe Bubble Bee could drive through them.

In the movie, they even stay that its 2 years later and Sam is going off to college on the East Coast. As he’s talking to his girlfriend, Mikaela, he gets the jacket out of the closet that he wore during the first movie. Something falls and it’s a piece of the ‘cube’! So you hadn’t been in your closet in 2 years? The jacket was in the front of the closet, and the piece was still there? But wait, here’s the crazy thing, the Decepticons are looking around the world for the piece. And when Sam finds it, it burns a hole in the floor and half of the house catches on fire, he doesn’t tell Bubble Bee or Optimus about the piece. He just gives it to his girlfriend and leaves for school. HUH? So many little things like that make you stop and scratch your head and go, WHAT?

Then there was the cursing. I wasn’t expecting the Transformers to have such foul mouths or be so raunchy. I just never expected to see a robot humping a girl’s leg or see a robot's testacies. Was that really necessary? The worst thing was when the twin robots, who were truly ethic (actually one kinda looked like Obama) said that they don’t do reading, “We’re not really down with that”. What? This movie truly isn’t for kids. If your child is under 15, don’t take them to see this movie. The sexual overlay and the bad language might have you answering questions that you aren’t ready to answer.

Was Transformers worth seeing? Yes, and you do have to see it on the big screen to get the full effect, but paying matinee will be a much better deal cause if you go at night, you might fall a sleep cause the movie is 2hrs and 3mins long. There will be a point where you’ll ask, is this movie over, yet? Please let this end! But you’ll enjoy it. I hope Transformers franchise isn’t like the X-Men movies. The first one was okay, the second one was really good and the third sucked. We’ll see.

Opening June 26, 2009

This movie looks like a true tear jerker. Got to love that Abigail Breslin! She’s an amazing actress for someone who’s only 13. I really wish the Academy Awards would bring back the children’s Oscar. This girl deserves it!

Opening June 24, 2009

With any luck, Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen will be better than the first one. Yeah, I know I was one of the few people who didn’t like the movie. Most people who like the original movie wasn’t because of the plot but because of the special effects. Now don’t get me wrong the special effects where off the chain and I think part 2 should have some great ones too. But will it have a plot? That’s the real question.

Review: Year One

Every time I see the trailer for Year One, I really don’t laugh. I just look at it. So when I was given the opportunity to see the movie for free, I figured why not. I mean, I’m not spending any money so what’s a couple of hours? Damn, I was wrong.

First we all know that this couldn’t have been the first year of the Earth by no stretch of the imagination, but we’re going to let that go just for the fun of it. This movie had no plot at all. If it had nice special effects maybe that would be fine but with bad comedy on top of it…it was a waste of time. I think I would have rather watched paint dry.

You would think that with Jack Black and Michael Cera, it would be a funny movie. Jack Black played in some of the funniest movies in the last couple of years, School of Rock, Kung Fu Panda, King Kong (wait that was a comedy right?). Then you have the new guy, Michael Cera from Juno and Superbad. Plus, the movie is directed by Harold Ramis. This is the same genius behind National Lampoon's Vacation, Caddyshack and Analyze This. So how did this movie go so wrong?

Let’s look at a different way. How much do you really love Jack Black’s movies? You laughed a couple of times in School of Rock but did you really laugh? Did you talk to your friends about something he did or something the kids did? Then Michael Cera, does he play the same kind of guy in all of his movies? And if the last big movie that Harold Ramis directed was Analyze That in 2002, then maybe his humor is out of date.

Whatever the issues are, this movie is a true waste of time. I’m mad that I spent an hour and 45 minutes watching it. My friend asked me after it was over, “What was that?” All I could do was shrug my shoulders. I have no clue. Don’t pay for that movie. Don’t rent it; don’t wait for cable, wait until it comes on broadcast TV. The commercials will make it better ‘because you can change the channel!’ If you want to see a comedy about the beginning of time, rent Mel Brooks' History of the World: Part 1. A much better movie with a lot of laughs. Way, way better!

Opening June 19, 2009

I love Sandra Bullock in romantic comedies. Two Weeks Notice is one of my favorite romantic comedies. I'm still laughing at her having to go potty in the people's RV. LOL She is so funny! I must say that I’m very excited to see The Proposal. I just hope it lives up to hype of her other comedies.

Year One is one of those movies that you just go to see if you need a good laugh. You know it’s not going to be really good but a couple of good laughs. To be honest, looking at the trailer doesn’t make me want to run and see it. There’s not a clip that makes me laugh or at least a good laugh. I say wait until matinee after it’s been out for 3 weeks. Don’t run to see it.

Review: The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

Sitting in the theater waiting on The Taking of Pelham 123, I started thinking, “God, I hope this movie is good.” But it should be good since it stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta right? I mean, do they really ever make a bad movie? Two hours later, I have to say no, they haven’t yet. Now don’t get me wrong, this isn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen. Nor is it the best movie that Denzel and John have ever done, but it is a good movie.

The Taking is a remake of the 1974 movie of the same title. The original movie stared Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, and Hector Elizondo. The plots of the movie were basically the same. A gang of highjackers take over a subway train with hostages and demand money for their safe return. The city has only 1 hour to get the highjackers 1 million dollars. In 2009, the highjackers asked for a little more, like 10 million. There were a few small differences, nothing major. Now I will admit, I haven’t seen the original yet. The people who have seen both movies, say that they prefer the original, but is that really shocking? How many remakes are better than original? Think on that one.

The movie is set in the “24” (Keifer Sutherland’s TV show) format, which you have to believe that all of this is possible in an hour. If you’ve ever been to New York, you know getting across town in less than an hour is a leap but hey, why not. You quickly let that go because you believe in the characters.

Overall, I will say the movie was good. I really enjoyed the action and the suspense. Now it’s not a big action movie like Terminator: Salvation or Transformers 2. If that’s what you’re looking for then you’ll be mad, but if you like a movie that makes you think, then The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is the one for you.

Opening June 12, 2009

How cute does this movie look? The last great family film that Eddie Murphy did was Daddy Daycare, but this movie might just put him back in to that genre. He needs to do something with all the child support he has to pay! No matter how good this movie is, the little girl is adorable.

A remake of the 1974 movie of the same title, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, gets Denzel Washington back into the action seat and John Travolta back as a bad guy. Heck for no other reason to see these two on screen together is worth seeing!

Review: My Life In Ruins

My Life in Ruins is that cute little date movie. With a very simple plot and very basic characters, the movie moved quickly.

As you can tell from the trailer, an American, Georgia becomes a tour guide in Greece. She hates her job for understandable reasons. The bus’ air condition doesn’t work, the tourists are annoying, and the bus driver is the looks like a bear. Plus her rival tour guide gets the luxury bus and elegant hotels while her crew has to stay in dump hotels.

As the movie moves, you see how Georgia’s life falls apart and with a few acts of kind nice it is easily put back together. I can’t say that you fall in love with the characters but you do cheer for Georgia’s team. It doesn’t take long to figure out how it’s going to end. Some movies that becomes a problem, but in My Life In Ruins, it’s not a problem. You’re rather excited that it all comes together nicely. There is no real climax or big fight between the love interests which is kind of refreshing. If nothing else, this movie makes you want to go to Greece.

Grade: B

Review: Up

If you love a good hearted movie that gets you teary eyed and gives you a belly laugh then Up is the movie for you. By the end of the first 10 minutes, you’ll be a little teary eyed. All of the adults will understand what’s happening and will try to hold down the lump in their throat. Young kids won’t really get it. Kinda like every time you watched Bambi, you knew that the mother was going to die but you just didn’t want it to happen.

As Up moves a long, you can’t help but laugh. The little boy, Russell is way too funny. He really is an 8 year old. The relationship between Russell and Carl is so sweet. You can just see a grandfather and grandson having this kind of relationship. The only problem is that you’ve seen some of the funniest parts in the trailers. But do you mind? Not really. They were just as funny on the big screen as they were on TV.

All of the characters work in this movie. It really is just as heart warming if not more than last year’s WALL-E. You can’t help but fall in love with everyone. This movie was worth the money. Even full price if you can go without the little kids.

Grade: A+

Monday, June 1, 2009

Opening June 5, 2009

From the looks of this movie, every man should enjoy this movie and I think the ladies will get a few good laughs too. Full price? I’m thinking not, but for matinee, it should be a good time.

Never really liked the series, so I’m not going into the movie with high hopes. I guess the kids will enjoy it, but I’m waiting for cable.

Looks like a great date movie. Now, all you have to do is find a date. If you got one, don’t make him pay full price for this movie, you might owe him something afterwards.

Summer of Movies: June Edition

So we’re now down one month into the Summer Movie season. Overall, May was okay. The best two movies of May were Star Trek & Up. Everything else…well you don’t have to run out to see.

Today is June 1st and we have to see what’s hitting the theaters!

Title: The Hangover
Release Date: June 5th
Plot (from IMDB.com): In Las Vegas, three groomsmen lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, forcing them to retrace their steps in order to find him before the church bells ring.
Thoughts: Looks like an updated version of 1984’s The Bachelor Party with Tom Hanks which isn’t really a bad thing. This could be that sleeper hit that everyone gets a good laugh out of. Now, I’m not saying take the kids, but adults should laugh hard in this movie.

Title: Land of the Lost
Release Date: June 5th
Plot (from IMDB.com): On his latest expedition, Dr. Rick Marshall is sucked into a space-time vortex alongside his research assistant and a redneck survivalist (McBride). In this alternate universe, the trio make friends with a primate named Chaka, their only ally in a world full of dinosaurs and other fantastic creatures. Can they all make it back to our world alive, and if so: Will Dr. Marshall can go from zero to hero with his discoveries?
Thoughts: Didn’t we just see this movie? It looks almost like last year’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. Nothing really exciting. I can wait for cable.

Title: My Life In Ruins
Release Date: June 5th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A travel guide rediscovers her romantic side, with a very unlikely match, as she whisks a group of tourists around Greece.
Thoughts: Looks cute. Not sure if I really want to pay to see this movie, but it does look like a good date movie. I’m just scared that I’ve seen too much of the plot in the trailer.

Title: The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3
Release Date: June 12th
Plot (from IMDB.com): Armed men hijack a New York City subway train, holding the passengers hostage in return for a ransom, and turning an ordinary day's work for dispatcher Walter Garbe into a face-off with the mastermind behind the crime
Thoughts: I’m excited to see this movie! It’s been away since Denzel had been in a good action film. Plus we get John Travolta playing a bad guy!! Wow!! I can’t wait. If this movie is half as good as the trailer…it’s going to be GREAT!!!

Title: Imagine That
Release Date: June 12th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A financial executive who can't stop his career down spiral is invited into his daughter's imaginary world, where solutions to his problems await
Thoughts: OOOOh, this movie reminds me of the first Dr. Doolittle movie. That kid friendly movie that adults can enjoy. Heck if nothing else, the little girl in the movie is adorable.

Title: Year One
Release Date: June 19th
Plot (from IMDB.com): When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.
Thoughts: So this is supposed to be the first year of the world? Hum…goes against every book I’ve read. But let’s let that go. Although I really enjoy Jack Black’s crazy humor, I know I’m not paying for this movie or at least not full price.

Title: The Proposal
Release Date: June 19th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada.
Thoughts: I’m so happy to have Sandra Bullock back doing romantic comedies! Don’t know how great it’s going to be on the big screen, but who cares! It’s Sandra Bullock!! YEAH!

Title: Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen
Release Date: June 24th
Plot (from IMDB.com): Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers. Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a second epic battle.
Thoughts: So I hope the plot of this one is better than the first one. Don’t get me wrong, the special effect of the first Transformers were off the chain but the plot? Optimus Prime could have walk threw the holes in it! Wow. Must see it on the big screen to get the full effect, but I’ll only pay matinee for it. My hopes aren’t really high.

Title: My Sister’s Keeper
Release Date: June 26th
Plot (from IMDB.com): Anna Fitzgerald looks to earn medical emancipation from her parents who until now have relied on their youngest child to help their leukemia-stricken daughter Kate remain alive.
Thoughts: Dang, from the looks of the trailer it looks like Miss Anna is selfish or are the parents selfish? I don’t know if I want to go to the movies to see this. I think I’ll wait so I can cry alone.

Review: Terminator Salvation

I’m a huge fan of the series. Personally, I would have been fine with them ending the franchise with Terminator 2. Part three truly was the lead into Part 4. And the television show is a nice filler between part 2 and part 3. But part 4 starts off confusing.

If you never watch the television show, then parts of the movie don’t make sense. I didn’t understand some characters and if they were terminators or not. Where does this sit in the timeline? For half of the movie, I was just confused. I’m so glad that I had a good friend who watched the show and filled me in.

In part 4, Skynet was trying to kill Kyle Reese, who if you watched the first Terminator, you know is John Conner’s father. Kyle and John were friends and Kyle volunteered to go back into time to save Sarah Conner. By killing Kyle, then John wouldn’t exist. But that’s wrong wouldn’t John still be alive since someone else impregnated Sarah originally, and there isn’t any proof that John really is Kyle’s. She could have already been pregnant. So many questions, No answers.

I can’t say that it was a bad movie, it was just okay. You have to see it on the big screen to appreciate it. But when you walk out, you know they are going to make part 5. And as a good friend said, “Maybe just like the new Batman franchise, the sequel will be a lot better than the one before it.” I pray so!

Review: Night At the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

If you saw the first Night at the Museum and liked it, then you will enjoy the second one. It’s the same humor but not as exciting. Yes, there are a lot more characters in this movie, but because you’ve seen all of the statues come to life before and you know why they come to life, some of the excitement from the first movie is lost.

You will learn a lot about the Smithsonian itself. I don’t think I ever realized how big the Smithsonian really is and that it ran under the National Mall. I still want to know how nobody else sees all of this stuff happening. But I guess you have to let that go since your watching the Abe Lincoln statue walk across the National Mall and not leave any footprints.

Overall, you’ll enjoy the movie. Kids will love it and adults will enjoy it too. Worth paying matinee price for but it will even better on DVD.

Grade: B

Opening May 29, 2009

I’m not a big horror movie person. Very few catch my attention. But I must admit there’s something about Drag Me To Hell that I want to see. Will I pay money to see it? I’m thinking not. But when it comes to DVD, I’ll rent it.

Got to love Pixar movies! I mean, these are the same people who made Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monster’s Inc, The Incredibles and last year’s hit, WALL-E. I don’t think they can do wrong. I’m looking forward to see what happens in UP.

Review: Angels & Demons

My new saying for 2009 is “You can’t make Diamonds out of Crap”. Well sad to say this is also the theme for Angels and Demons. Okay, the movie wasn’t total crap, but it was close to it.

In 2006, I remember being very excited to see Da Vinci Code. There was so much hype about the movie plus the controversy with the Catholic Church it was a must see! Being Catholic, I had to know what the talk was all about. Did this movie really shake some people’s faith? I went and well if you’ve seen the movie, you know that there was no reason to be upset or even excited about the movie. So when I saw the trailer for Angels and Demons, I again was a little excited but I was also a little nervous. Would A&D be better than DVC?

The answer is kinda. You would think that with Tom Hanks, an Oscar Winning actor and Ron Howard, an Oscar Winning director there should be MAGIC on the screen. Instead of being David Copperfield magic, we got the magician from Frosty The Snowman cartoon! There was no real excitement.

One of the things that make a movie great is if you start to care about the characters. There should be someone you are rooting for. You want that person to live and someone else to die. In A&D, there wasn’t any of that. The audience never really got to care about anybody when the action started. In any ‘who done-it’, you should want the bad guy to be caught or killed or that great battle between good and evil. That never really happened.

It was like watching a bad episode of Scooby-Doo. After a point, you ran out of characters so you knew who the villain was and you really didn’t care. There was the connection that was missing. No chemistry between anyone. Midway into the movie, I asked my cousin “is it almost over?” And she answered, “I wish”. And that’s a major problem! No one cheered or laughed or anything during the movie. We all sat like zombies wondering…“I spent money on this?”

Go see it? Not unless you are really bored and have money to spend. Again, Angels and Demons was better than the Da Vinci Code. The action was better and the plot was better but over all…A waste of time.

Grade: C

Opening May 21, 2009

As a huge fan of the Terminator franchise, I must admit that I’m pretty excited about seeing the 4th movie in the series. How will this end? Will it end? There is a big part of me that wants this to be the last one. But there’s that part that wants to hear those 3 words again and again…. “I’ll be back”!

Opening May 22, 2009

Those Wayans Brothers aren’t quite right but that’s what we love about them! Now to have Damon’s son get into acting and star in one of the films, WOW! This movie makes me think of the first Scary Movie film. Those were the days. I just hope they don’t do too many of these and they get stale!

The first Night at the Museum was really cute and funny. Yeah, other critics didn’t like it, but I did. It was interesting and different. Let’s see if they can top it or if they are going to mess up a good thing.

Amazingly enough, Angels & Demons is the only national release this week. Interesting. I know the other studios couldn’t have been afraid to go up against it. I mean the other movie in the series, The Da Vince Code sucked so why be scared? But I will say that other critics say that Angels & Demons is better. The trailer looks good but so did the other one. I'm on the fence on paying to see this one.

With a limited release, you might not get to see the Brother’s Bloom until it comes out on DVD. From the trailer it looks like a cute movie but it reminds me a lot of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Cain. Personally, I think I’ll wait until DVD.

Management is one of those quirky romantic comedies that on a lazy Sunday afternoon, you’d sit and watch it but to pay to see it? Houston that is a negative.

O'Horten seems to one of those odd little movies that could be good if you like odd movies and sub-titles. This movie screams CABLE!!!

Review: Star Trek

When I sat down in the theater with my popcorn to see Star Trek, I was so excited. I had been looking forward to seeing this movie every since it was announced and now I’m finally ready. Star Trek was absolutely great!

Was it the special effect that made the movie great? Yes and no. Now, it takes a lot for the special effects to blow me away. Some of the effects were really amazing but nothing that stood out. What made this movie worth the 2 hours were the storyline and the characters.

Unfortunately I can’t tell you much about the plot without giving it away, but I will say that there is a twist that happens very early in the movie. You’ll get the twist but it will make a lot of sense later. You’ll have that ‘Aw Ha’ moment and for the rest of the movie your mouth will be on the floor.

As for the characters, they are true to form. You really could see Christopher Pine as a young Kirk and John Cho as Sulu. There were a lot of questions if Zachary Quinto could pull off Spock because of the bad guy he plays on Heroes. May that was a leg up for him. Not sure, but I really fell for him. And so did someone else…oops said too much.

If you see no other movie this month, heck the whole summer, you must see this movie on the big screen! I’m a semi trekkie, which means I don’t speak Klingon or know the episode names, but I know the characters. If you are a true trekkie or a semi-trekkie like me it is worth full price twice! If you are a new school trekkie (Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, etc) or new to Star Trek, this is still a must see. You’ll get classic lines like “Damn it, I’m a doctor not a physicist" and much more. I’m looking forward to going back and seeing it again! I’m ready for the sequel, heck a whole new series. Dang it, I’ve too much again! UGH!!! So I'll just say...Live Long and Prosper - Good Luck! You'll get it once you see the movie.

Grade: A+

Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

As excited as I was to see Wolverine, I must admit I was a little nervous. The first X-Men movie was okay. X-Men 2 was better and X-Men 3 was bad except for the very end. The trailer looked great but would it live up to the hype?

Yes it did. Thank goodness. X-Men Origins: Wolverine really did take you from his first mutant experience to almost the beginning of the first X-Men movie. Some of the storyline conflicted with what I already knew about Wolverine, but then again the original X-Men movie was a conflicting. I will admit that the movie did answer a lot of questions that I had about Wolverine. From his memory loss, he’s relationship with Sabertooth, to the woman who broke his heart.

The action was excellent and the story line wasn’t bad either. The way they told the story was very interesting. Always knew that Logan was older than all of the other X-Men but I didn’t know how old. I won’t tell you hold old he is ‘cause that will spoil a little bit of the movie. We’ll just say he’s way older than you thought. How’s that?

Overall, was it worth seeing? Yes. And if you pay full price you won’t be mad. Magneto’s story comes out in 2011 but I just hope that 20th Century Fox keeps up the trend and does Professor X, and Storm. Those are only ones that I care about. Now I really think that Storm would have to be re-cast. Love Halle Berry and all but she’s not a good Storm at all. But that’s a WHOLE other subject. I will tell you this, no matter how much you plan to pay for this movie, you must see it on the big screen to get the full effect!

Opening May 8, 2009

It been a while since a good funny comedy that’s not just down right silly has hit theaters. I just hope Next Day Air leaves up to the trailers. But my real hope is that Benny Boom who is famous music video director does a good job with his first feature length film. You see how well Hype Williams did with Belly, right? Come on Benny with a hit!

Must see…enough said. Check back on Friday for my full review!

Summer of Movies

Do you remember when the big summer movies started on Memorial Day weekend? That was always the first big movie weekend. You couldn’t wait until the end of May for summer to start and the great movies to start. YEAH!! But now, the big movies are starting earlier and earlier.

Today is May 1st and the first blockbuster movie is hitting the screen. Wow! Let’s go through the Summer of Movies month by month. Will this summer live up to other summers? Especially since Memorial Day is on May 25th and summer doesn’t officially start until June 21st.

Title: X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Release Date: May 1st
Plot (from IMDB.com): Wolverine lives a mutant life, seeks revenge against Victor Creed (who will later become Sabertooth) for the death of his girlfriend, and ultimately ends up going through the mutant Weapon X program.
Thoughts: If this movie is ½ as good as the trailer, it will be better than all of the original X-Men movies!

Title: Star Trek
Release Date: May 8th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members
Thoughts: As a semi-Trekkie, I’m so excited to see this movie. This is going to be a great movie.

Title: Angles & Demons
Release Date: May 15th
Plot (from IMDB.com): Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon works to solve a murder and prevent a terrorist act against the Vatican
Thoughts: Wasn't excited about the first one and I can't say I'm excited about this one.

Title: Terminator Salvation
Release Date: May 21st
Plot (from IMDB.com): After Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust, a group of survivors led by John Connor (Bale) struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job.
Thoughts: Love the Terminator series, but I really hope we are coming to end. I'm not sure if the storyline will stay fresh with 5 more movies.

Title: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Release Date: May 22nd
Plot (from IMDB.com): Security guard Larry Daley infiltrates the Smithsonian Institute in order to rescue Jedediah and Octavius, who have been shipped to the museum by mistake.
Thoughts: The first Night at the Museum was really cute. Not the best movie, but Ben Stiller has this quirkiness about him that you can't help but love, so I'm sure we'll all enjoy this one.

Title: Dance Flick
Release Date: May 22nd
Plot (from IMDB.com): Street dancer Thomas Uncles is from the wrong side of the tracks, but his bond with the beautiful Megan White might help the duo realize their dreams as the enter in the mother of all dance battles.
Thoughts: The Wayane's Brothers are at it again and I'm so happy!

Title: Up!
Release Date: May 29
Plot (from IMDB.com): By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.
Thoughts: How can you not love Pixar? Who would have ever thought of this. I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

The beginning of June, look for a list of the big movies of the month. As always, I'll post the weekly movies with the trailers. Stay tune for more!!!

Opening May 1, 2009

This is one of those movies to watch on the big screen but only if you can’t get into see the move you really to see. The Battle for Terra has DVD written all over it. I’m shocked that it was released into theaters. So if you truly have nothing else to do and you want to get out of the heat, then go see this movie, otherwise wait.

The Ghost of Girlfriends Past looks like a cute romantic comedy. It’s been a while since one has hit the screen. Date movie, sure take a date to see this one, but ladies just know that you need to do something nice for him if he takes you.

OMG!!! I can’t wait to see this movie. This one you have to see on the big screen to get the full effect! This is a must see!!! Enough said!!

Obsessed - The Review

I went into the movie with low expectations and I’m sad to say that the movie lived up to those low expectations. The acting, the plot, the action was all so predictable. Rain Forest Films (Trois, The Gospel, Stomp The Yard) can make a descent movie then the movie will make a LEFT turn and turns into crap. In Obsessed, they made that LEFT turn in the first 10 minutes and never turned back RIGHT.

From the trailer, we all knew that a temp, Lisa fell for her boss, Derek and wanted to be with him. But he is happily married to Sharon and has a young son. Lisa begins stalking him and tries to be the only woman in his life. She attempted suicide in his hotel room then goes after the wife. Again I got all of that from the trailer!

The movie quickly turns into Fatal Attraction meets The Temp meets Crush without the suspense. There were too many questions that the audience was left with. Why was she crazy? Was this the first time that she had done this? Why were the police investigating an attempted suiced? And why was a two year old still on formula? So many questions.

The plot for Obsessed listed on IMDB.com is “What started as an office flirtation culminates in a violent and bloody standoff between two women who both feel they have everything to lose -- and are both willing to die to keep from losing it.” So what movie is that because that’s not Obsessed. Or maybe that was the problem they didn’t know what the movie should be about so they gave us a big old mess. Oh and that BIG twist they say that you’re going to get at the end…it never happens unless I blinked and miss it.

The really sad thing about the movie was how the bad acting transferred from one person to another like a cold. Beyonce had the ‘bad acting cold’ and passed it to Idris then to the little boy got it. The two year old is a WHOLE other subject. Beyonce never got rid of her 'cold' but the symptoms got less severe at times. Poor Idris had to take a couple of days off from the film because he wasn’t ‘feeling well’. I think he had to take something to get over that ‘cold’. And as much as I wish I could blame Beyonce’s bad acting on the downfall of this movie, nobody could have saved this movie. It might have been a little less pain if Kerry Washington or Sanaa Lathan would have taken her place but it was really the plot of the movie. You can’t turn crap into diamonds no matter what. Sorry.

If you want to see a good thriller, then rent Fatal Attraction or Crush. You can always get Thin Line Between Love and Hate. Lynn Whitfield can play a great crazy. But if you want to go out see a movie…skip this one. Don’t waste your time or money. Now it is a comedy but we all know that it’s not supposed to be one. You’ll know how the movie ends in the first 10 minutes. When it comes on cable, sit down and watch Obsessed with a group of friends and laugh. Don’t rent it, that will cost too much. Don’t worry it will be on TV by the end of the year.

The Soloist - review

After watching the trailer what was your first thought? “Wow!” “That looks like an amazing movie?” “That’s going to be a tear jerker” You thought all of those things didn’t you? Well, The Soloist was all and wasn’t all of that. Huh?

Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr. both do a great job in the movie. If they get nominated for a Golden Globe or an Oscar, I won’t be shocked. The bad thing about the movie was you saw everything in the trailer. There were no real surprises.

You know going in that Nathaniel (Foxx) was a brilliant cellist and is mentally ill. Already know that by chance he meets Steve Lopez (Downey). Steve is a reporter and writes a story about Nathaniel. You knew all of that from the trailer. So why watch the movie?

The movie doesn’t really take you anywhere. Yeah, it’s based on a true story and the audience gets a glimpse into the life of schizophrenia that’s a little different than 2001’s A Beautiful Mind. But that’s about it. Because it’s true and liberties should be taken with the end, which it didn’t really have, I really think I could have watched it on HBO.

Great performances? Yes! Good script? Yes! Worth paying for? Not really. I’d wait for the DVD release.

Opening April 24, 2009

This movie seems so familiar, but I must admit I love to see Terrence Howard as the bad guy. Now how bad he really is in this movie might be up for debate but a con-artist turned manager will be very interesting. At least in this movie we’ll get to see if Channing Tatum can do more than just dance. He had killer moves in Step Up & Step Up 2, so let’s see what else he can do.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Beyonce is not an actress. If you watch the trailer you will see how bad of an actress she really is. Okay, let’s look at the story line…is it just me but is this an updated version of Fatal Attraction? Family with one child, crazy blond in love with the husband and will do anything to get him. Wow, never seen that before! If they want to make it interesting…they should let the crazy girl killer herself and the husband gets blamed for it. Oh, wait that was the original plot for Fatal Attraction. Dang…well they’ve got to come up with a good twist other wise this movie is going to a YAWN!!!

Wow, I love Jamie Foxx and from the looks of this movie, he might get another Oscar nomination. This movie looks really good. I’d pay full price to see it. Yep…full price and you know I don’t say that often!

More Sex...More City!!!

Sex in the City Fan? I know you've heard by now that there is going to be a part 2. Well did you know that they are shooting some...if not all of it in London?

Did you know that according to an "insider" that the sequel will include key scenes of Carrie Bradshaw and her husband Big in London, possibly shooting this winter for six weeks. Hummm... And here is a key thing, the film will also see the lead character struggling with her husband's infidelity. Interesting.

Sex in the City 2 will hit theaters on May 28, 2010. Excited yet?

Opening April 17, 2009

This movie looks really cute, kind of like Freaky Friday. It’s good to know that Zac Efron can do more than just sing and dance. Maybe now we can see if he really can act. Wait, didn’t Disney do a similar movie with Tia & Tamera Mowry with the same title? Interesting.

Personally, I didn’t think the first one was that great that they should make a part 2 but who can resist Jason Statham? He’s great in these crazy action movies no matter how bad the dialog. Okay, really who besides me goes for the dialog?

Interesting concept…but haven’t we seen this before? Can’t you just see all of the twist and turns and then the bad guy ends up being either the person you thought in the beginning or someone so random that you are like, Huh? I think I’ll wait before I spend my money on this one.
