Opening July 15, 2009

Can you believe that only one major film is opening this weekend? What is going on?

The 6th movie in the Harry Potter franshise finally hits theaters. Since the movie was pushed back from last fall, the fans are very excited. Personally, this one looks the best. I just can’t believe that there is another movie. My goodness, when will it end?

Review: Public Enemies

From the trailer of Public Enemies, you would think that this movie is full of action, bank robberies and excitement. Maybe even an updated version of the 1987 classic film, The Untouchables! Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

Public Enemies moved very slowly. The main problem was the movie was trying to tell too many stories at one time. Is the movie about the birth of the FBI or John Dillinger? I wasn’t sure. Now, when we got to the action scenes, they were good and exciting but the scenes where too far apart. I really wanted to learn more about Dillinger and his romance with Billie. But once I realized who the director was, it explained a lot. Michael Mann is the director. He directed the 2006 flop Miami Vice. It had the same problem as Public Enemies…confusingly slow!

The only saving grace for the movie was Johnny Depp. I do not understand why he has not won an Oscar yet. You can’t help but fall in love with Dillinger because of Depp’s portrayal. He was amazing! Although you knew that Dillinger was going to die, you wanted him to live. I love cheering for the bad guy. Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis was okay. He was the same in Batman Begins and Terminator: Salvation. The same blah character. He doesn’t bring any depth to a character to me. It’s the same thing all the time. Yawn.

Overall, Public Enemies was okay. Not great but okay. It’s worth seeing but I say wait for the DVD and enjoy. You don’t have to see it on the big screen.

Grade: B -

Opening July 10, 2009

Basically, Brüno is the same movie as the 2006 hit film, Borat. The only difference is Brüno is a flamboyant gay Austrian fashionista. I'm not sure if the gay rights groups should be excited or pissed. Either way, they can find If you liked Borat then you’ll like this one. Personally, I’ll wait for cable.

I know I’ve seen this movie before. I know this plot is nothing new, but yet I find myself wanting to see it. True, it will be better on DVD this fall but I do love a cute teen movie and this movie has all of the makings of one.

Summer of Movies: The July Edition

Title: Ice Age: The Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Release Date: July 1st
Plot (from IMDB.com): When Sid gets into some trouble, it's up to Manny, Ellie, Diego, and Scrat to save their friend. Their mission leads them to an underground world where encounter dinosaurs, flora, and fauna -- as well as a one-eyed, dino-hunting weasel named Buck.
Thoughts: Looks cute, just hope that it’s better than the second one!

Title: Public Enemies
Release Date: July 1st
Plot (from IMDB.com): The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.
Thoughts: Love Johnny Depp as a bad guy. That’s enough said. If this movie is a quarter as good as the previews, it’s going to be great!!!

Title: Brüno
Release Date: July 10th
Plot (from IMDB.com): Sacha Cohen does it again as the flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter Brüno who travels the world in search of the latest style trends and opinions on all things pop culture.
Thoughts: Not sure what my thoughts are on this movie, but I will say I won’t spend a lot of money on it.

Title: I Love You, Beth Cooper!
Release Date: July 10th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A nerdy valedictorian proclaims his love for the hottest and most popular girl in school – Beth Cooper – during his graduation speech. Much to his surprise, Beth shows up at his door that very night and decides to show him the best night of his life.
Thoughts: I love teen movies. They are so over the top. Although this one looks really cute, I somehow think I’ve seen this before. But I’ll watch it anyway. If nothing else it will be great on a Saturday evening.

Title: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Release Date: July 1st
Plot (from IMDB.com): In his sixth year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter discovers even more about the evil Lord Voldemort's past, thanks to his mentor Dumbledore and mysterious textbook marked "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince." By the end of the year, nothing will ever be the same
Thoughts: The question is all over the web, has Harry Potter lost his magic? Well from the people I know who love Harry and the gang, they’ll say NO he hasn’t. So if you love Harry, then this is the movie for you. All I want to know is…when does he graduate? Dang!

Title: G-Force
Release Date: July 24th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A covert espionage team of specially-trained guinea pigs are sent on a mission to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world.
Thoughts: You know going in that this movie is going to be two things: for kids and silly. If you have kids, this will be a must see. If you don’t, wait until cable.

Title: Orphan
Release Date: July 24th
Plot (from IMDB.com): After their unborn baby dies, Kate and John Coleman decide to adopt a child as a hopeful way to bring some joy and normalcy into their lives. Esther, a 9-year-old orphan, captivates the couple, and comes home to live with them, though a strange sequence of events follows Esther's arrival.
Thoughts: This movie is coming out in limited release but I hope they expanded the film. Orphan reminds me a lot of the Good Son with Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood. I’m excited to see this one!

Title: The Ugly Truth
Release Date: July 24th
Plot (from IMDB.com): A macho morning TV show correspondent makes a bet with his love-challenged producer: If his tips on how to land and keep a guy don't work, he'll quit the business. But while he coaches her through a fledgling romance, can he avoid falling for her, and vice versa?
Thoughts: The Ugly Truth reminds me soooo much of 2001’s Someone Like You staring Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman. Let’s see if they throw in a twist to make it different. Chances are slim on that.

Title: Funny People
Release Date: July 31st
Plot (from IMDB.com): Veteran stand-up comic George Simmons is given less than a year to live, and befriends an aspiring comedian, whom he hires as his personal assistant and protégé, as he reconnects with his past.
Thoughts: I’m truly on the fence on this movie. I like Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen is okay but this movie doesn’t say anything to me.

Title: Adam
Release Date: July 31st
Plot (from IMDB.com): Soon after Beth moves into her new apartment, the beautiful, emotionally fragile writer is drawn to her downstairs neighbor, Adam, a handsome young guy who has Asperger's Syndrome, an odd fellow with whom a relationship seems impossible.
Thoughts: Did you ever see this cookie movie called The Boy Who Could Fly? If not, rent it then watch Adam. Just from the previews, it’s almost the same movie.

Title: Aliens in the Attic
Release Date: July 31st
Plot (from IMDB.com): The Pearsons find their family vacation interrupted by an alien invasion. The species, who initially say they come in peace, using mind-control gadgets and other threatening devices. Can the Pearson kids save the family from doom?
Thoughts: Thoughts….I don’t think I have any. The same kids you took to see G-Force will want you to take them to see this movie. Just be prepared to take a nap. Although seeing Doris Roberts flip in the air might be interesting.

Opening July 1, 2009

This movie looks too cute. I really hope that it’s better than the second Ice Age movie. I thought that on was not well put together and the ‘re-populating the species’ was not a good thing for little kids. How do you explain to a little kid what that means? Let’s hope part 3, doesn’t have those kinds of surprises.

I’m so excited to see this movie. I love Johnny Depp as a bad guy. Wow. This is going to be good.

Review: Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen

Two years ago, I sat in a theater and watched Transformers. As exciting as the special effects were, the plot had holes big enough for Optimus Prime to drive through. So when it was time to go see the Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen, I was a bit nervous. I will say this much, the plot did have holes, but this time they weren’t as big. Maybe Bubble Bee could drive through them.

In the movie, they even stay that its 2 years later and Sam is going off to college on the East Coast. As he’s talking to his girlfriend, Mikaela, he gets the jacket out of the closet that he wore during the first movie. Something falls and it’s a piece of the ‘cube’! So you hadn’t been in your closet in 2 years? The jacket was in the front of the closet, and the piece was still there? But wait, here’s the crazy thing, the Decepticons are looking around the world for the piece. And when Sam finds it, it burns a hole in the floor and half of the house catches on fire, he doesn’t tell Bubble Bee or Optimus about the piece. He just gives it to his girlfriend and leaves for school. HUH? So many little things like that make you stop and scratch your head and go, WHAT?

Then there was the cursing. I wasn’t expecting the Transformers to have such foul mouths or be so raunchy. I just never expected to see a robot humping a girl’s leg or see a robot's testacies. Was that really necessary? The worst thing was when the twin robots, who were truly ethic (actually one kinda looked like Obama) said that they don’t do reading, “We’re not really down with that”. What? This movie truly isn’t for kids. If your child is under 15, don’t take them to see this movie. The sexual overlay and the bad language might have you answering questions that you aren’t ready to answer.

Was Transformers worth seeing? Yes, and you do have to see it on the big screen to get the full effect, but paying matinee will be a much better deal cause if you go at night, you might fall a sleep cause the movie is 2hrs and 3mins long. There will be a point where you’ll ask, is this movie over, yet? Please let this end! But you’ll enjoy it. I hope Transformers franchise isn’t like the X-Men movies. The first one was okay, the second one was really good and the third sucked. We’ll see.

Opening June 26, 2009

This movie looks like a true tear jerker. Got to love that Abigail Breslin! She’s an amazing actress for someone who’s only 13. I really wish the Academy Awards would bring back the children’s Oscar. This girl deserves it!
